Ventura County supervisors said Tuesday they'll consider restrictions on vape shops, including a ban on flavored vaping products. Supervisors voted 4-0 to ask staff to prepare an emergency ordinance that could place a moratorium on new vape and tobacco retail stores in the unincorporated areas of the county.
The moratorium would be aimed at allowing the county to prepare a licensing program for tobacco retailers that could include restrictions aimed at limiting youth access to vaping products. The ordinance would also call for an interim licensing program that could include a ban on flavored products in unincorporated areas that could be quickly implemented.
The goal is to gain more control over vape shops, said Supervisor Linda Parks who introduced the request for the ordinance along with Supervisor Steve Bennett. She expressed particular concern about teen vaping, quoting data that suggests nearly one of three 11th-graders in Ventura County has used vaping products.
